SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘We Love Katamari’, ‘Super Mega Baseball 4’, and Today’s Other Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for June 2nd, 2023. It’s Friday, so we have to mop up the remaining releases of the week. Before that though, we’ve got news of a new Nintendo first-party release that is coming very soon. We then head into the new release summaries, with the highlights being We Love Katamari Reroll and Super Mega Baseball 4. We close things out as we always do with the new and expiring sales of the day. Let’s get to work!

‘Everybody 1-2-Switch’ Announced for June 30 Release

Remember 1-2-Switch? Back when the Switch launched, you could tell Nintendo was a little uncertain about what kind of audience it was for. It fired a spreadshot of games in those early days aimed at various crowds, with 1-2-Switch seemingly designed to lure in the Wii fans. It wasn’t a big hit by any means, but it did manage to sell a few million and change, and I suppose that’s enough to get a sequel. Dropped out of the sky, announced four weeks before release. Well, there you go. June 30th. Horse-head guy. No useful screenshots because nothing really to capture. Rock on.

New Releases

We Love Katamari Reroll + Royal Reverie ($29.99)

There are a fair number of Katamari games, but it’s safe to say the quality started to fall off at a certain point. Exactly where is an argument for the ages, but a lot of people would say We Love Katamari was the peak of this series. It adds more interesting objectives to aim for plus a delightfully odd story about the King of All Cosmos in his younger years. This remake has all the content of the original, plus some new stuff to play through under the name Royal Reverie. With this and the first game available, I now have all the Katamari Damacy I want on my Switch.

Super Mega Baseball 4 ($49.99)

If you can’t make a good baseball game franchise, why not just buy one? That seems to be what Electronic Arts was thinking, and now we have the weird situation of seeing Super Mega Baseball 4 releasing with EA Sports branding. Well, that’s fine. The game is still fantastic, and it features a ton of baseball legends like Jason Giambi, Vladimir Guerrero, Johnny Damon, Ozzie Smith, and more. Whether or not you prefer MLB The Show or this is an exercise best left to you to decide, but I will at least say that baseball fans are eating a lot better than hockey fans on Switch.

Homebody ($19.99)

Sure a lot of horror games recently. Must be something in the water. Anyway, this is a survival horror game about a woman who reunites with her old college friends when they all decide to rent a remote house in the countryside to watch a meteor shower. It seems like a normal bad time until the power goes off and someone turns up dead. A killer is picking them off one by one, and you’ll have to help our heroine survive any way she can. Explore the house, solve puzzles, and evade the killer until you can figure out what’s really going on. Reviews seem decent over on Steam and Switch owners certainly enjoy their horror games, so I imagine this will prove a good match.

Puzzle by Nikoli S Yajilin ($4.99)

Another Nikoli S puzzle game from Hamster, and this one’s rules are a little hard to explain in text. Once you play a couple you’ll get it, though. Like many of the other games in this series, it’s all about following rules and use logic to separate cells using lines. It’s very original, and again once you find your footing it’s rather enjoyable.

Fall of the New Age ($15.99)

Find the hidden objects, one of which is your missing brother. As I have said a lot recently, I’m out of meaningful things to say about this endless wave of extremely similar hidden object adventure games. But if it looks good to you, don’t let me stop you. I’m just not into this genre, so it’s hard for me to notice the finer nuances.

Million Shells ($15.00)

This game calls itself a tower defense game, and I suppose it is. It reminds me a bit of Missile Command, though. Is that tower defense? Oh no. Anyway, you control the guns of a giant battleship. Destroy all the targets and don’t die. That’s about all there is to it. I’m sure some out there will enjoy its straightforward nature.

Kuroi Tsubasa ($4.99)

Blackwing the devil has decided to give the human realm a little visit, and that wouldn’t be a big problem except his evil shadow slipped out with him and started causing trouble. To stop his dark side he’ll need to team up with an office worker and her friends in this quirky visual novel. Provided you enjoy the genre, this is a decent pick-up for a fiver. Very charming.

7 Horizons ($12.99)

This game has massive five-dollar Switch platformer energy. Just exudes it from every pore. Yet as you can see, it is not five dollars. This is a conundrum for the ages. It’s of the run-and-gun variety, and I wish I had something interesting to say about it. There just isn’t much going on here worth noting. Average as it gets.

Prison Simulator ($19.99)

You play as a prison guard in this one, so it’s really more of a prison guard simulator. You’ve got a promotion chance coming up in a month, so you’ve got to do your best if you want to move on up. Will you be a law-abider, or will you go bad and reap the rewards? There’s a campaign mode where you work your way through a story, and a free play mode where you can just have fun being drunk on power. This one’s got great reviews over on Steam, so despite the title calling to mind one of those asset flip games, it seems to actually have the goods.

Johnny Trigger: Sniper ($4.99)

Another port of a free-to-play mobile game, and I’m sure you’re familiar with this kind of game. Use a sniper rifle to shoot at targets, clear missions, use the money to upgrade your arsenal, then do it all over again. Try it for free on your mobile device if you’re interested, and I suppose if you like it you can drop a fiver here to have it for keeps.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Not a bad little list for this week, I suppose. Highlights include Them’s Fightin’ Herds and most of the Shantae games, but there’s a fair bit in there for a variety of tastes. Not much in the weekend outbox, but you can fill up on those Dadish games if you like good platformers. But maybe you don’t. Check those lists!

That’s all for today and this week, friends. We’ll be back next week with more new releases, more sales, some reviews, and some news where applicable. My hospital visit today had decent results, though I ended up losing half a day of work because of it. The price of peace of mind, I suppose. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend, and as always, thanks for reading!
