Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for July 28th, 2021. In today’s article, we’ve got a couple of news items to check out before we get to the usual business. That usual business today involves a few new releases, none of which are actually bad. Wow! It also involves some new sales, some of which are bad! But some of which are good! Truly, life comes in a whole spectrum of emotions. We’ve got the lists of new sales and expiring ones for you to check out. Let’s get to the games!
News
The Next ‘Super Smash Bros.’ Event Will Send You Flying
Bumpers. They’re in so many kinds of games, and they can either be your best friend or your worst enemy. Which will they be for you when you play this upcoming weekend’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate event? It’s a tournament event this time, but rather than have any restrictions on characters or the like, the main gimmick is just that there are a lot of bumper items around. The more you win, the higher quality Spirits you’ll get your hands on. Surely worth a little frustration, right? The tournament starts on Friday and will run for the usual three days through the weekend.
‘Claymates’ and Other Retro Games Added to Nintendo Switch Online Today
It’s the day we’ve all been waiting for: Nintendo Switch Online retro game update day! Ever since Nintendo announced this latest spate of Super NES games last week, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers have been champing at the bit to get their hands on them. Well, wait no longer. Update your app and gain immediate access to a fine platter of Scrimblo Bimblo joy. Marvel at the body horror of platformer Claymates from Interplay! Jiggle into a more British-flavored sort of body horror in platformer Jelly Boy from Probe Software by way of Throwback Entertainment! Project yourself back in time with the sublime “the man at the store said this was the one all the kids were asking for" essence that positively coats action-puzzler Bombuzal! They are all here, and if nothing else, you don’t have to directly pay for them. That’s nice, isn’t it? As an added bonus, there’s a new SP version of Super Mario Bros. 3 in the NES app that starts you on World 8 with all the suits in your inventory.
New Releases
Fuga: Melodies of Steel ($39.99)
SwitchArcade Highlight!
This RPG is the latest in the Little Tail Bronx series that started with Tail Concerto on the PlayStation and continued on the 3DS with Solatorobo: Red the Hunter. There was also a blink-and-you-missed-it mobile game, but we don’t usually talk about that. Anyway, if you’ve played either of those previous games, you know how much heart this series can have. In this one, you take control of a group of children who seek to defend their families by taking control of a massive, mysterious tank. They’ll live inside the tank, and you’ll get to know each of them as they build relationships with each other. You’ll assign each of them to various gun turrets based on their capabilities, and you can choose to sacrifice them to power the tank’s Soul Cannon if you find yourself in a pinch. With striking visuals, enjoyable gameplay, and a solid story, this is a game you won’t want to sleep on.
Unbound: Worlds Apart ($19.99)
Here’s a puzzle platformer where you play as a little mage named Soli who has the power to use a variety of portals to overcome obstacles. Each portal has its own abilities, such as gravity manipulation, time manipulation, and so on. There are ten different portals in total, and you’ll need to use all of them to get through the game. It looks nice but I haven’t been able to put my hands on it yet, so I can’t say too much about it with any certainty. It promises some twitch platforming, and I could see that being either some serious fun or a serious headache when you take the portal system into account.
Ayo the Clown ($19.99)
Why does it have to be a clown? Sigh. Okay, provided you’re okay with the main character, who tightly rides the line between cute and creepy, you might want to check out this side-scrolling platformer. Ayo is a clown who is searching for his missing dog as he makes his way through some wacky worlds using his unusual arsenal. There are lots of different weapons and items to use, and the stage designs can get quite imaginative as you go. I’ve been able to play this one a bit before its release and it’s actually surprisingly competent for an effort that almost came out of nowhere. I’ll have a review of it soon.
Sales
(North American eShop, US Prices)
There’s a big sale on NISA games going on right now, with almost everything except the Disgaea games discounted. Sim fans will find plenty to like with things like Tropico 6 and Project Highrise on sale, and Crysis Remastered is available for a very nice price. That’s not even touching the outbox, which has its share of treats to offer. Check through both lists carefully, as we always do in these circles.
